Francophile Friday: Feel the Pain and Eat It Anyway

{Paris Pain de Campagne: ink & watercolour illustration © Shell-Sherree}

Today we play Guess the Location.  The prize is the warm glow of helping your fellow Chez Shell partygoers, so everyone play along and we won't let such minor details as accuracy get in the way of a good story {a philosophy embraced by many news outlets on the planet}.  That said, I'm fairly confident someone really will know which boulangerie/pâtisserie we're pressing our noses against.  {Wait ~ wrong window.  How did that get in here...}  Let's carry a casual dress code into the weekend as we indulge both sweet and savoury tooths with today's selection.  Which would you choose?  I'm on the fence.  And on that note...

Happy Francophile Friday to you!

Inspiration with thanks here.
Update:  Location is (Stéphane) Secco, 20 rue Jean-Nicot, 75007 {thanks to our learned readers!}

  2. I love the subtle colors in this one, Shell. Super super super. And you always have the best pins! I want that blouse.

  3. Wonderful! And I'll go along with Cali on the location. I also want that blouse. :-)
    So lovely to start the weekend with sumptuous treats. And Macie noticed how Kitty "hitched" a ride inside. May there be bountiful treats for all this weekend!

  4. Detective Cali, you're good! Thank you. There's a nice view of it here. The pink facade looks more subtle in some photos I've seen than others. :)

    Thanks, Petrea! And I wouldn't mind that blouse myself. {Wait ~ blouse is code for Hugh, isn't it?} ;)

    Ms M ~ Macie has good eyes. And no wonder we want the 'blouse'. :) It can be dressed up or down for just about every occasion and will always be fetching.

  5. So many scrumptious options from which to choose! You bring all the delectables to life in this detailed illo, Shell. I think I'll have a macaron (or two), please. Thank you! And thank you, Ms M/Macie, for pointing out Kitty. She's like a little surprise.

  6. Thanks, Susan! I'm glad I don't absorb calories from the pastries I illustrate or I'd be in big trouble. I'm not sure Paris shopkeepers have the same lenient policy for kitties as pooches {which is something that clearly should be addressed if equal rights are not in place} so tucking into the tote is the safe option!

  7. Ooooh—nicely done, ma belle! In my dream, this place is right downstairs from my charming Paris apartment. Not a problem because calories don't count even if you're actually eating them. Oh, and Hugh lives right next door and he's a VERY GOOD neighbor. (Your work is so inspiring, Shell!)

  8. Mmm-hmmmmmm. So you just happen to run out of sugar constantly, Alexa, and he just happens to have an endless supply...

    1. Oh my. I misspelled reminder and it came out remainder. So again, let me say...How delightful! And now we have the street address to add to our notebook, which we will pen in with a few flourishes, as a reminder.

    2. Thanks, Shanna ~ and here's to handwritten flourishes.

  14. Your idea of casual and my idea of casual are completely unrelated. But your drawing is very relatable. Do the French indulge in Bear Claws? I love them

  15. Pastry is a universal language, PA. That said, I'm not sure if Bear Claws are one of its dialects in Paris. Perhaps one of our more learned pastry connoisseurs knows...

  17. Missed you too, Debs! :) I'll bob up again as soon as I can. Til then, take good care, my sweet.

  18. Or, as many do: feel the pain, and eat it away. Temporarily at least!

  19. True, puppy dog. There's a reason why we call things comfort food.

  22. Hello, I have just discovered your blog-what great illustrations you have-too bad we cannot reach in and grab a baguette.

  23. Hi, Esme ~ thank you for dropping by and I'm glad you're enjoying it here. It's past my breakfast time ~ reaching in for a baguette sounds like a mighty fine idea!!

  24. That's not fair. I was ding so good resisting dessert.

  28. The treats are constantly being replenished here, dear V, and there are freshly-filled pistachio and violet macarons with your name on them. :)

  29. Well, this is making me hungry, and I haven't even had dinner!

  30. It's July - it's winter for you. Time to cuddle up with your drawing supplies and hang out in Italy.

  31. Heh! Doesn't that sound lovely, PA. Escaping winter every year is on my Field of Dreams list.
