Feline Friday: In Purrfect Pawsition

Le Chat Noir II in Paris, ink and watercolour illustration by Shell-Sherree

It's that time of year again, when shares in pumpkin stocks go through the roof.  I think Halloween is something one had to grow up with to fully understand.  And I didn't grow up with it.  But in a brief nod to the tradition for those who embrace it, here is a black kitty cat who is testing herself as a good luck charm by venturing where others would fear to tread.  You might not be sufficiently scared of Trick or Treaters to climb out onto your roof to escape, but if they fill you with a modicum of trepidation, dressing for the part will help.  On the other hand, if you can't beat them, you might like to join them.  This will be handy either way.  Meanwhile, I'll take the opportunity to eat more chocolate of the dark noir variety.  You're very welcome to join me.  And on that note...

Happy Feline Friday to you!

  1. Dear Shell, while reading your post I thought I might try to explain Halloween to you. But I don't fully understand it either. This year, I'd like to spend it on the roof, rather than answering the door every two minutes and handing out candy. Ah, c'est la vie.

  2. Feline Friday -- love it! Kitty's in the perfect place to observe all those trick-or-treaters with her keen eyes.

    Is there room on the roof for me, too? (And Macie? :-)) I'll bring chocolate -- and perhaps a nice red wine to go with it...

  5. Petrea ~ you make the roof sound even more appealing...

    Most certainly, Ms M! Chocolate, red wine, and some pâté for Macie ... a feast!

    I wouldn't expect you to feel otherwise, dear puppy dog.

    Thanks, Favourite Vintage Finds! Right back at you and Purrson. x

  6. Love this fearless little kitty! I usually spend Halloween chez the ex and enjoy the perfect view of the NYC Halloween parade from his digs (and, yes, his cat used to stroll along the 3-inch window ledge as though it wasn't 10 flights up!). But Petrea's roof scenario sounds pretty good too, especially if we can have chocolate and wine and fun costumes.

  7. Shell.. do you know this song?.. 'When this ol' world starts getting me down?..
    When this old world starts a getting me down
    And people are just too much for me to face (or Halloween)
    I'll climb way up to the top of the stairs
    And all my cares just drift right into space

    On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
    And there the world below don't bother me, no, no
    Enjoyed your kitty today .. thanks puurfect x j

  10. I got a bit of a head start. I just finished off some dark chocolate and now I'm heading up to the roof with one of the black cats in the house. Ok, not really. I'm actually curled up on the couch with her (Frieda), listening to Louise snore. But for Halloween, I'll be up on the roof. Great suggestion, Shell.

  11. Alexa ~ sounds like a lovely tradition {except for kitty's daredevil routine!}

    Nice one, The Cape Club ~ thank you! Petrea, that's a classic! And I have a bit of a soft spot for this version.

    Debs ~ I'm rifling through my wardrobe for something appropriate. Lucky for me, I love black, black and black.

    Susan ~ don't you love it when they snore!!

  12. Oh, I felt like such a shit for posting those Altadena horror house photos on the blog. That's not Halloween -- it's mostly dark chocolate, tiny hands that can scoop three snicker bars up in a single grab, and a boxer who once loved this holiday above all others. "Someone's knocking! Hurry, hurry, shake the lead out before they leave!"

  13. Very daring kitty, but she seems quite comfortable up there. Adorable! And the Shell roof Halloween party is shaping up to be a fun one -- chocolate, wine and great costumes! I live in an apartment so don't get any kids knocking on my door for candy, which is a bummer because I love seeing kids in their costumes. I saw a little girl of about 5 today in a Little Red Riding Hood costume. So cute.

  14. hiker ~ so those ghoulish things aren't the norm? Praise the Lord and pass me more dark chocolate. {I'm sure your beautiful Phoebe will be there with you in spirit.}

    Little Red Riding Hood would be so cute, Katie. Say, you could whip one up for yourself to wear to our rooftop celebration!

  18. Halloween is more slutty (at least where costumes are concerned) than scary these days, Shell. Which is a scary thought!

    Guess certain cats know that black is considered a slimming color. How very fashion forward!

  19. Cali ~ I don't understand how one morphed into the other. Any excuse? Things go full circle, so hopefully this phase will fast track!
