Francophile Friday: Paris Porcelaine

ink & watercolour illustration, 8.75" x 7" [22.5 x 18cm] ACQUIRE PRINTS

Attention, bulls:  Step away from the china shop.  Sadly, there is no Welcome Mat awaiting you at Le Cabinet de Porcelaine on the Left Bank in Paris.  But please, enjoy this little illustration I've done for you instead.  {I've performed a mild renovation in the process.}  Allow your imaginations to roam free and follow them far, far away, where superheroes are the only people licensed to carry capes, and butterflies tickle your noses.  {Thanks to our globetrotting Katie for the inspiration!}

As for the rest of us, we can tiptoe inside and see what floral porcelain delicacies await, courtesy of the creativity and craftsmanship of Didier Gardillou and Samuel Mazy, who have breathed modern life into the ancient craft of the porcelain florist.  If you missed out on the Clumsy gene, you could wear this.  I'm erring on the cautious side and minding my voluminosity with this.  And on that note...

Happy Francophile Friday to you!

  3. This is sublime. The colors are such a lift on this rather gloomy late afternoon. Katie will love this! (I know I do)

  4. Lovely! You always know how to create a delightful weekend! [It'd be best if I went with the slim gown rather than the voluminous one]

  5. Wow! That floral bridal gown is fantastic; I've never seen anything like it.

Also, am I the only one thinking that shade of blue in your watercolor is just about the prettiest color I've ever seen.

  6. Beautiful! And I agree with Margaret that your choice of blue is fabulous (especially since the actual color of the storefront is much duller). Virginia this shop is located at 37 rue de Verneuil in the 7th, at rue du Bac. Even though I'm sure I'd knock over countless Euros worth of fabulous porcelain, I'm going to be bold and wear that floral gown!

  7. Thanks, Ann ~ always lovely to see you!

    V ~ your wish is Katie's command...

from cali ~ I started off trying to replicate the actual colour, but before I knew it, some turquoise had found its way into the palette. What can I say. ;)

Ms M ~ I'll order us a rack's worth of the Paul and Joe numbers.

Margaret ~ you have a thing for that colour, don't you. I'll bet Colin does, too. You have so much in common.

Thanks, dear Katie! I'm glad you like the makeover. My watercolours have a mind of their own sometimes. As for the gown, good for you! I've procured us all some spray bottles and we will spritz you every few minutes.

  8. I'm happy to spritz Katie, as is my duty. I don't want the dress for myself, though I wouldn't mind the hat. Not that I'd wear it on my head. What I really want is for Didier and Samuel to make it into a porcelain chandelier for me.

  9. An absolutely exquisite porcelain purveyor, Shell, and your voluminosity is breathtaking.I'm with the blue brigade: I'm just sending for the grounds staff to have everything painted exactly that colour round at mine.

  10. I came by to get my girly-girl fix. Now I can face the day feeling properly feminine. (I'm going to bring this blue into the paint shop and see if they can match it for my door.)

  11. I'll bet that if Didier and Samuel saw your illo, they'd run to BHV toute de suite and repaint the front of their shop in this exact fabulous color. When I visit, I'll try to make myself as small as possible—better safe than the clumsy owner by default of something I surely can't afford!

  13. Petrea ~ that chandelier sounds magnificent. Good thinking.

Mise ~ I hope the rowdies are inside at the time. Not that the Blue Daughter would perhaps mind...

Hiker ~ if they match it to your satisfaction, feel free to come back and reveal the colour name.

Thanks, Alexa! And on this occasion, being a shrinking violet is probably a good thing.

dkshopgirl ~ how lovely, thank you! It's my pleasure...

  14. And dear Katie, is this where they make the porcelain flower wreaths and crosses that you find in all the cemeteries in Paris???

  16. V ~ I hope it doesn't hail often in Paris... {a very practical wish from someone who lives in a hail-prone city}.

Thanks, Lori Lynn ~ I'm glad you like it.

  17. Oh sweet Shell what a lovely illogic this is with the gorgeous color of aqua. I do hope that thath dear Katie will tell us more about this little shop as I wondered like Virginia if they were the same as tho seen in the cemeteries around Paris. S many of the old ones are broken but I have seen new clusters in Montparnasse Cemetery. Do tell, ma chère

  19. Thanks, Genie. It's interesting that there are so many china/porcelain tributes left in the cemeteries of Paris.

Favourite Vintage Finds ~ I had a feeling you'd appreciate the flowers. And right back at you.

  20. Virginia and Genie I wish I had more information about whether this shop has anything to do with the porcelain found in local cemeteries, but I have no clue. (I actually didn't go into the shop, but next time I will.) Hmm, I guess that means I'll have to head to Paris as soon as possible to find out for you!

  22. Katie ~ sounds like a good reason for all of us to head there asap.

    Thanks, Kellie ~ you, too.

  23. Since reading about Margaret's dream, I imagine Colin as 3-feet-tall each time I look at him. But he still makes me sigh. The blue is dreamy, too, Shell. What a fabulous little shop you've brought to life.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Heh! I concur, Susan ~ Colin at any height would still be dreamy.

Merci, grazie, thank you for joining our conversation lounge. Your smile lights up the room. Even more beautifully than our crystal chandelier. x
