Venerdi in Venice: Slice of Piazzetta

ink & watercolour weensy meep miniature, 3.5" x 2.5" [9 x 6.5cm] ACQUIRE A MEEP

If this was a night painting, these lamps would shed some light on the Piazzetta as we head past the Doge's Palace towards St Mark's Basilica in Venice.  During daytime hours, though, we can simply allow them to look pretty.  {Grazie mille to Pierre of Venice Daily Photo for the always-beautiful inspiration!} Judging by this scenery, if you hear anyone in Venice say, "I'm in the Doge house," there's no need to feel sorry for them or shout them a consolatory vino {unless you're in the mood for something medicinal yourself}.  And on that note...

Happy Venerdi in Venice to you!

  2. Really. Are there pink street lamps in any other city in the world?

  3. Oh, brilliant! I'm clapping with delight. Not just for the pink lamps, but because I've been there!

Thanks, Shell and Pierre, for such loveliness.

  5. Hiker ~ heh heh! One of my favourite Pacino movies. He'd look right at home here.

Petrea ~ if there are, let's find them!

    You're most welcome, PCN!

Cali ~ my recommendation: take two macarons, but hopefully you'll still have that fever in the morning!

  7. Your wonderful weensy just takes me right there (where everything is beautiful (including whoever stands in that pink lamplight)—thank you so much (and Pierre as well)! And your commentary reminds me of a cartoon I saved from the New Yorker: a student, clearly in Venice of centuries ago, explaining to the teacher, "The doge ate my homework."

  8. Thanks, Margaret! I suspect it would be hard not to be happy there.

Alexa ~ hee hee, good one! I didn't experience Venice at night, just two separate days {staying elsewhere}, so these lamps casting their flattering blush is something I still look forward to experiencing.

  10. ShSh, may I make a couple of edits to your otherwise fine writing/paintings:

    1) Slice of Pizza, and
    2) Dog House

There, that makes this even more appetizing to a canine.

Cafe ~ my apologies ~ the humble puppy dog appreciates straight forward language...

  12. And those lights do look quite pretty, even turned off. I am amazed by your ability to have those details on this scale!

  13. Amy ~ I can't have too many coffees when doing these!

  14. Ah beautiful Venice. Stunning details in such a teeny weeny drawing! And I do think it's a heaping helping of your amazing talent and not just lots of coffee that helps create wonderful drawings like this. It looks to me like the pink streetlights in the foreground are getting quite friendly (how do you say canoodle in Italian?), as the one on the left is giving us a knowing smile!

  15. Thanks, Katie!! And oops, my "coffee" comment didn't come out the right way. What I meant was that I can't have more than one or two coffees, lest I get the caffeine shakes while I'm drawing. :) Now I can't stop smiling at the canoodling streetlights. {No idea on the Italian ~ hopefully someone else does! I'll bet it sounds nice.}

  17. Just beautiful, Shell! I do love Venice and want to go back. I could say that I had to go back to find the hood that I knocked into the water from the Vaporetto. I think that it was late at night and had something to do with wine consumption. Hummmmm?

  18. Thanks, dear Virginia!! Not days due to its weensiness, but my hand and eyes were glad when it was time to rest. :)

Genie ~ sounds like quite a night! Surely Vaporetti were made for such occasions. ;)
