Time and Butter-Flies with Guerlain

The party season has started over here, and to help one flitter around, sprinkling the fairy dust of intrigue and desire in one's wake, we can turn to Guerlain, an iconic fragrance house of Paris, founded by Pierre François Pascal Guerlain in 1828 as a "Parfumeur Vinaigrier" on 42 Rue de Rivoli, on the same site as the Hôtel Meurice.

Its perfumed shimmer powder is a "violet scented, sparkling powder" that will "sublimate and illuminate shoulders, arms, back, décolleté and hair."  I don't know about you, but I've always wanted to sublimate myself. This year's 2009 Christmas Collection features a white gold bottle with a long black tassel atomiser, and screened with black lace.  Very elegant.  Very nice.  I just wish I'd known that before I found my clipping from what must have been last year's magazine, and drew you the 2008 collection: Midnight Butterfly.  Oops. Time flies.

I'm kind of glad, though.  The silver and purple-lilac tones of that collection are soft and pretty and feminine, and can we ever have too many butterflies?

  1. I don't think I ever wanted to sublimate myself. Maybe that's why I don't wear perfume.

    I wonder if you'll ever do a picture of what's in a tough girl's shopping bag? What does she bring home, I wonder? Something not pink and frilly but dark and chilly? Or slick and silly? Or does she hide in her bag one sweet, white lily?

  2. That sounded like I was making a request. I wasn't. I went on a tangent and followed it willy nilly.

  3. Guerlain, my favorite parfumeur ! At least when I can afford to buy CHAMADE by Guerlain.
    The bottle is not as pretty as yours, a golden metal one, but still, if Santa would be kind and rich enough........LOL. It's on our family wish list anyway !

  5. I am really curious as to how this perfume smells. I like the color of the bottle. And I love butterflies!

  6. Ah, very nice. Myself and Guerlain have got along well for years, as evidenced by my dressing table, and even just reading your post makes me feel delightfully flitty. That's a new word, coined in your honour.

  7. Hee hee, Petrea!! I imagine the tough girl's name to be Billy. {Not Billie.}

    Marylène ~ I thought presents were governed by whether I'd been naughty or nice, not whether Santa was kind or rich enough. That explains some things. :)

    Cali ~ from what I could find out, the bottle is a silvery lilac, so with the shimmery contents, it has all kinds of pretty stuff going on! And somehow I imagine the violet scent to be a mysterious one, perhaps with some muskiness to it.

    Mise ~ a word in my honour? Why thank you! {I'll remember that next giveaway...}

  8. Shouldn't there be a technology by now whereby I can click on your lovely bottle and receive a mist of lovely perfume?
    I'm loving your blog :-)

  9. Well, I took one look at the drawing and said, "Surely, that's from the 2008 collection. What is Shell thinking?" Thank you for the explanation or I would have been in a dither all morning long.

    Lovely colors.

  10. Personally, I feel like my shoulders are sublimated all the time. They are sublimating right now as I write this. But then I lounge in luxury.

  11. I think Flies like butter. If not, give them time. They like all kinds of stuff.

  13. What a pretty bottle! I've heard of Guerlain, but don't know his scents. And I've never heard of "scented sparkling powder". Although it does sound elegant, I don't know if the other people at my gym would like to contend with the violet-scented sparkling powder left behind after my sublimated and illuminated shoulders, arms and back have touched the weight machines. Besides, I'm addicted to my Sonia Rykiel perfume.

  14. I have on occasion wanted to both sublimate and illuminate my décolleté (on the one hand, enough is enough; on the other, if you've got it flaunt it). Never liked anything but Balmain or YSL perfume and finally made YSL's Paris my "forever" fragrance. Would SO love it if it came in such a bottle as this, though! Simply gorgeous, especially as captured by you.

  15. Thanks, Gypsy! And I wish I could provide such misting from afar.

    Hiker ~ I didn't think I'd get that one past you. There are no flies on you, that's for sure.

    Margaret ~ I suspect your sublimation reaches a whole new level when you bake.

    Cafe ~ and an Australian summer would not be the same without flies.

    Amy ~ I figured I owed you something pretty after scaring you last time!

    Katie ~ LOL!! Well, if you ever find a violet-scented trail of sublimation all over the gym equipment, you'll be able to illuminate your fellow gymnasts as to the cause, if not the source.

    Alexa ~ that was all very illuminating. :) Whenever you mention your YSL Paris, I want to go to the local department store to be spritzed!

  16. I don't wear perfume but your description and drawing almost made me want to just roll around in the stuff on the floor all night long, sublimating my shoulders, arms, back and, um, the rest of myself.

  17. PCN ~ roll away ~ glad to be of sublimatory assistance!!
