Awash in Venice

Venice. A while ago. I fell in love with the way the light washed into the water with a soft, fuzzy, out-of-focus driftiness about it. I thought there was magic in the air. Then I re-read the dosage on my herbal travel sickness remedy.

Luckily, that wore off and I was thankful to find the light still danced with the water in a mystical way. Anyhow, it was wet and flooded and overcast this day, so the stone and shadows in this little secluded spot next to a canal seemed to be all kinds of grey. Sorry, I can't tell you where it was. But wherever it was, it was wet. And pretty.

  1. What is it about Venice that brings out the influenza in people? My husband was there and had a fever the whole time. Must be the damp. But it is very magical and beautiful -- like your picture.

  2. Oooooh, I really really love this! How did you know that Venice is my second-favorite place on the planet?

  3. Margaret ~ it also brings out the affluenza. But worth it. :)

Alexa ~ I had a feeling in my water that you'd like this. Ah, Venezia!

  4. I adore this sketch Shell. I would frame it and put it on my wall somewhere. It's beautiful.
We chose to bypass Venice on our trip because we were pressed for time and spent the extra days on Lake Como instead. Misty? Yes. Wet? Yes (the Lake - it didn't rain). But not underfoot, fortunately.

  5. MmeBenaut ~ thank you ... I'm happy you like it! Lake Como or Venice? That would be a tough choice to make. Hopefully Venice next time!

  6. Shell, I didn't know you were in Venice! I'm so envious. How long will you be there? Are you visiting other places in Italy?

I LOVE Venice (and most of Italy). And you captured that wet secluded corner beautifully. How I wish I had your talent. I agree with MmeBenaut that your sketch is frame-worthy.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  7. Those herbals will do that! Have never been to Italy but it's on my must-see list for sure!

  8. City Sage Anne ~ I'm positive you'll adore it! Definitely your cup of tea. {Well, more coffee than tea.}

PCN ~ it's OK, there's no need to be envious or concerned for my upset tummy. I did this years ago, in 1993 {say it fast} after returning from my Italian trip. Don't worry, you'll definitely hear about it {ad nauseum} before I go overseas again! The Italian trip was work-related {based in Modena, famous for its balsamic vinegar} and involved many visits to tile and marble factories. {Many!} Not much time for sight-seeing ~ just a few afternoon trips here and there ~ but I loved it all.

  11. Venezia !
I just spent 4 cold, rainy and windy days in Venice 10 years ago and, still, I'll give anything to go back !!!
I fell in love with the city and, what is rarer, with the inhabitants, so joyful, smiling and active persons.
I promise, my next trip abroad, after the US is for Venice and Rome.

  13. Shell, it's wonderful that you got to go to Venice, even better that work paid for it!

I need to convince someone I have important business in Prague or Brisbane or Barcelona or Morocco...

  14. PCN ~ yes, that was definitely a big perk at the time.

Please let me know if I can help you convince someone that important business for you in Brisbane should be at the top of the list!
